PM Modi Hails India’s Digital Revolution: “1GB Data Now Cheaper Than a Cup of Tea”

At the inauguration of the India Mobile Congress 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored India’s rapid digital transformation, stating that one GB of wireless data in the country now costs less than a cup of tea.

Modi further hailed India’s success in building a robust digital public infrastructure as evidence of the government’s “digital-first” approach. “This is the best time to invest, innovate, and make in India,” he said, urging industry leaders and innovators to take advantage of India’s expanding digital ecosystem.

India Emerges as a Global Telecom Powerhouse

PM Modi highlighted that India today holds the position of the world’s second-largest telecom and 5G market, supported by a combination of manpower, mobility, and an innovation-driven mindset. He noted that the country’s achievements reflect not only technological progress but also a commitment to inclusivity and affordability in digital access.

He emphasised that digital connectivity in India has transitioned from being a privilege to becoming an essential part of daily life. “This means that digital connectivity in India is no longer a luxury; it is an integral part of Indian life,” he said.

Made in India 4G Stack Marks a Major Milestone

India has recently unveiled its Made in India 4G Stack, a landmark development that places the nation among just five countries worldwide capable of such indigenous technology production. PM Modi said this marks a significant stride toward self-reliance in the telecom sector and reinforces India’s growing leadership in advanced digital infrastructure.

He added that India’s data consumption ranks among the highest globally, further highlighting the strength of its digital ecosystem and user engagement.

From 2G Struggles to 5G Leadership

Reflecting on India’s remarkable digital journey, PM Modi remarked, “The country that once struggled with 2G today has 5G reaching almost every district.” He reiterated that India’s digital success story is a product of consistent policy reforms and the government’s focus on innovation-led growth.

He also reminded us that during his Independence Day address on August 15, he had announced that 2025 will be a year of major changes and bold reforms, signalling the government’s continued focus on accelerating technological advancement.

Make in India: From Scepticism to Success

PM Modi recounted how the idea of ‘Make in India’ once faced scepticism, with many doubting the nation’s capacity to manufacture technologically sophisticated products. Today, he said, India stands as a hub of opportunity in sectors such as semiconductors, mobile devices, and electronics.

Calling for stronger domestic production capabilities, he urged that mobile manufacturing and key components like chipsets, batteries, displays, and sensors should increasingly be developed within India. This, he said, would strengthen the country’s position as a global manufacturing and innovation leader.

PM Modi emphasised that the government is speeding up the pace of reforms to sustain this digital momentum. He asserted that the ongoing push toward self-reliance and technological leadership will continue to define India’s economic and industrial growth in the coming years.

As India cements its position as a global digital powerhouse, the Prime Minister’s message was clear — the nation is ready for the next big leap in innovation, investment, and inclusive digital growth.
