Shri Panneerselvam Madanagopal, CEO, MeitY Startup Hub, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), GoI, lauds India’s startup ecosystem and underlines the initiatives undertaken by the government for the proliferation of the startup ecosystem in the nation as others join him in a panel discussion at the Convergence India Expo 2025 at Pragati Maidan, Bharat Mandapam. He says, ” Entrepreneurship has existed in India for more than 100 years. Instances like the spice route and others are a remarkable example of the cross-border entrepreneurship and trading across the world.”
He goes on to highlight India’s potential in the emerging startup landscape at the national as well as the global level. He says, ” Nearly 17 ministries of the government of India today have a startup department that promotes entrepreneurship and skilling.” The CEO further goes on to highlight the initiatives undertaken by the MeitY to promote the tier-II & tier-III cities of India for entrepreneurship and startup culture.
Why Are Startups Important for India Today?
Mr. Madanagopal highlights three pertinent conditions that prevail in India today, which necessitate the emergence and nurturing of startups. First, the scale at which India’s market is evolving, coupled with the huge educated population that has to be employed. Second, brewing aspiration among the people to have a better standard of living. Third and last, envisioning a sustainable way of addressing all the above-mentioned concerns.
He meant that India’s current scenario demands ample entrepreneurial innovations to sustain its growing needs and aspirations.

Including Tier II and Tier III Cities
Mr. Madanagopal goes on to add that the MeitY startup hub is broadening its base to include tier-II and tier-III startups to expand the scope of the startup landscape in India. The inclusion provides startups and entrepreneurs with support, including money, resources, connections, etc., to fulfill their endeavors. It makes it easy for them to trace their path and let their solutions find a voice among the customers.
The 65 non-metro cities include Udaipur, Varangal, Kannauj, and Dhanbad, among others.
Inclusive Tech
MeitY’s startup hub, being the custodian of deep tech and electronic startups in India, is working towards developing and nurturing inclusive tech in three segments, Mr. Madanagopal says. Inclusivity ranges from women in deep tech to assistive tech for the aged population of India and, finally, vernacular tech for people with regional limitations. The government is focusing on these segments to increase the participation of the people, whether women, aged people, or even people with language limitations.
As India’s large chunk of population is poised to enter the age group of 60-65 in the near future, assistive tech holds great potential for the Indian market. Being prepared for the coming times is highly indispensable and will prove rewarding in the future.
