India has become the world’s largest base of open-source contributors, marking a historic milestone in the software development ecosystem. According to GitHub’s Octoverse 2025 report, this is the first time any country has overtaken the United States in open-source contribution volume.
This surge is being driven by the country’s booming developer community, which has rapidly grown alongside India’s expanding digital economy and strong tech talent pipeline.

5 Million New Developers Joined GitHub in 2025
GitHub reported that 5.2 million Indian developers joined the platform in 2025, accounting for more than 14% of all new accounts worldwide.
“India added more than 5.2M developers in 2025, which accounts for a little over 14% of GitHub’s total +36M new developers in 2025. That makes India the single largest source of new developers on GitHub this year, continuing its rapid rise since 2020,” the report stated.
This achievement places India ahead of the US in total open-source contribution volume — a sign of the nation’s maturing software innovation ecosystem.

The Road Ahead: One in Every Three Developers Will Be Indian by 2030
GitHub’s projections indicate that by 2030, India will have over 57 million developers, meaning one in every three new developers globally will be from India.
While India now leads in overall contributor count, the United States still tops in contribution volume, showing continued strength in large-scale enterprise and project-led development. Besides India and the US, countries like Germany, Indonesia, and Brazil are emerging as key open-source hubs.
