In a major boost to India's green mobility ambitions, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has announced that sales of electric vehicles (EVs) in the financial year 2024–25 have surpassed the one million mark. This milestone aligns closely with the national vision of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070 and promoting self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

H.D. Kumaraswamy, Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, Government of India, hailed the development, describing it as a testament to the government’s continued support for clean and sustainable transportation. “Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is leading the global shift towards green mobility,” he stated, crediting the ministry’s flagship schemes—FAME, EMPS, and PM E-DRIVE—for the surge in EV adoption.

EV Sales Record Impressive Growth

Electric two-wheeler (e-2W) sales reached 11,49,334 units in FY 2024–25, showing a 21% increase from the 9,48,561 units sold in the previous fiscal year. Electric three-wheelers (e-3W) in the L5 category saw an even sharper rise, with 1,59,235 units sold—marking a 57% jump over FY 2023–24’s tally of 1,01,581. These figures underscore a growing consumer shift towards electric mobility, fueled by policy support, increased awareness, and rising environmental concerns.

PM E-DRIVE Scheme Fuels the EV Momentum

Launched on September 29, 2024, the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme has become a key catalyst for EV growth in India. With a financial outlay of ₹10,900 crore over two years until March 31, 2026, this scheme has absorbed the earlier Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) 2024. Within just FY 2024–25, the PM E-DRIVE initiative has facilitated the registration of 10,10,101 electric two-wheelers and 1,22,982 electric three-wheelers on the VAHAN portal.

Environmental Impact in Numbers

Beyond sales, the PM E-DRIVE scheme has delivered substantial environmental benefits:

Daily fuel savings: 8,55,723 litres

Total fuel saved: 15.77 crore litres

Daily CO₂ emissions reduction: 12,48,100 kilograms

Total CO₂ emissions reduced: Over 23 crore kilograms

These achievements point to the scheme’s effectiveness in reducing India’s carbon footprint and fossil fuel dependency.

Investment and Employment Opportunities on the Rise

The government’s support for electric mobility is not just driving sales, but also fostering a robust EV manufacturing ecosystem. This includes growth in related infrastructure and job creation across the value chain—from production to charging stations. Additionally, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Auto Scheme is accelerating the transformation of the automotive sector. With 18 Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) already participating, the initiative is poised to further bolster India’s shift to advanced, sustainable, and self-reliant mobility solutions.
