In conversation with ICEA’s Pankaj Mohindroo at the 32nd Convergence India expo, which is co-located with the Mobile India Expo, Aman Gupta, boAt’s CEO and co-founder, made a bold remark on stringent work policies. This is amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding Shri Narayan Murthy’s remark asking youngsters to work 70 hours a week to excel in their careers.

Mr. Gupta says, “I don’t believe in the quantity concept; rather, the quality of work is more important,” when asked for his opinion. He goes on to add, “Infosys has done a great job. We all respect Narayan Murthy jee.” As he expresses his differences with the policy approach suggested by Murth, he continues to appreciate and laud Infosys for the revolution it has brought to India’s IT sector. He acknowledges it as he says, “Once, there was an Infosys Era.”

Efficiency is More Important.

Mr. Gupta purports a comparatively flexible approach to working hours that balances itself with respect and choice of the employees, enabling them a sense of freedom in whatever they do. He says, “If someone can finish work in less time, it is their efficiency that has to be credited.” He goes on to add layers to the discussion as he exemplifies the expectations of today’s workforce, which is willing to work better and more efficiently in non-pressure scenarios.

He goes on to add, “I don’t care as long as the person gets the job done.” It summarizes his leadership trait that prioritizes work more and policies less.

70-hour work policy

In a recent exchange, Shri Narayan Murthy, co-founder of Infosys, suggested that the young talent of India work 70 hours a week to excel in their careers. He says, “Somehow, our youth has a habit of not taking not-so-desirable habits from the West,” as he talks about work policies. He goes on to exemplify his 70-hour point with the example of the Germans and the Japanese and what they did after the 2nd World War to support their nation. He goes on to add that he doesn't believe in work-life balance and is disappointed with India’s shift to a 5-day workweek.
