Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced the appointment of Amitabh Kant, former G20 Sherpa of India and ex-CEO of NITI Aayog, as a non-executive, independent director on its board. The appointment, effective October 29, 2025, will be for a five-year term, subject to shareholder approval.

The decision was formalised during the company’s board meeting. L&T, one of India’s largest engineering and infrastructure conglomerates, stated in its exchange filing that Kant’s vast experience in governance, public policy, and economic strategy will play a critical role in shaping the company’s long-term direction.

A Strategic Move for Global Expansion

L&T emphasised that Kant’s appointment comes at a time when the company is accelerating its global growth, particularly in infrastructure, green energy, and sustainability-linked projects.

Kant’s extensive policy background and leadership in India’s economic planning are expected to enhance L&T’s efforts in driving innovation, sustainability, and international collaboration.

A Distinguished Career in Public Service

Amitabh Kant, a 1980 batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre, retired after an illustrious 45-year career in public service. Over the decades, he has led several transformative initiatives, from “Make in India” to “Startup India”, and represented India on the global stage during its G20 presidency.

His leadership at NITI Aayog and the G20 earned him a reputation for visionary policymaking, economic diplomacy, and execution excellence — qualities L&T aims to leverage as it strengthens its global footprint.

L&T’s Continued Focus on Leadership and Governance

The appointment of Kant reinforces L&T’s commitment to strong corporate governance and strategic foresight. With India’s infrastructure and sustainability sectors seeing rapid transformation, L&T is aligning its boardroom with some of the country’s most seasoned policy minds.
